JOJさんの新アルバムSPOTLIGHT、一斉発売まであと4日！

今日はBBC Radioのインタビューをあれこれ聞いていました。インタビュアーに日本ではなんて呼ばれているのって聞かれて「JOJサン」って答えているJOJさん(笑)。同じフレーズでも日本語と英語では随分違っているんだよ、例えばって言って24601も最後の１の音が「ワン」じゃなくて「イチ」ってなるんだよ、だから日本では違う番号になってるんだよってレクチャーしていました(笑)。（日本語では24653ですよね、「ン」の音で終わるように＾＾）

今日は10曲目のThrough The Barricadesです。

この歌は80'sポップ・シーンを代表するバンドの一つ、Spander Balletが1986年発表した曲。背景には北アイルランド問題があって、英国国教会側とカトリック側の対立、それぞれに生まれた恋人たちのことを歌っているんだそうです。バリケードって聞いて、聞き馴染んだ別のストーリーのイメージが強いですけどね(笑)。JOJさんもラジオのインタビューのなかでこのことに言及されていました。余談ですがJOJファン友さんの一人が、「私はこの曲がヒットした当時は東西ベルリンのことかと思ってた。そういえばSpander（Spandau）ってベルリンの要塞都市の名前なのよ」って教えてくれました。私たちの世界はあらゆるところに同様の問題を抱えていますね。時代を経てもなお、変わらない。だからこそ、今もこの曲は心に深く沁みるんでしょうね。

オーケストラの壮大な演奏とは対照的に、この曲はギターのタッチが際立つ演奏です。そこにJOJさんが息遣いを感じるような静かな歌い方で、しみじみとハートに訴えかけてくる感じ。私は今までもJOJさんのアルバムの中のギター曲が好きです。例えばHallelujahとか、Love of My Lifeとかね。オケバックに朗々とした歌唱はもちろんいいけれど、こういうハートフルな歌もしみじみと伝わってくるものがありますよね。ちょっと悲しいけど優しい気持ちになれる感じ。
